Understanding Calibration Levels (L1, L2, L3)

 The ADAS Map report will often refer to specific "Levels" of calibration. Here is what those terms mean regarding the work required:

ADAS Level 1: Static, Non-Targeted These are performed in-shop without special targets or road tests.

  • What it involves: The vehicle remains stationary. The work typically involves programming, coding, resetting, or initializing a module.
  • Technician Action: This may include measurement-based steps where the technician establishes the vehicle centerline or measures angles and enters those values into a scan tool.


ADAS Level 2: Dynamic These require the vehicle to be driven on the road.

  • What it involves: The vehicle must be driven under specific conditions (e.g., specific speeds, weather, or road types) so the system can "relearn" and calibrate itself.


ADAS Level 3: Static, Targeted These are complex calibrations requiring specialized equipment.

  • What it involves: Special targets must be placed at precise distances and angles around the vehicle.
  • Technician Action: Requires specialized fixtures, targets, mats, or Doppler equipment. Accurate measurements and vehicle setup are critical for success.
